Painting Poetry: The class will select poetry phrases to be used as inspiration for paintings. We will generate reflective strategies for creative writing, and in this way, will refine our vision for our painting. Poetry phrases and ephemera can be collaged into your journal as an additional strategy for refining and consolidating ideas.

Mark-making: Students will be introduced to traditional and non-traditional mark-making tools to explore the range of possibilities for self-expression. Focus will be on Enso painting as a sacred symbol in Zen Buddhism meaning circle, or sometimes, circle of togetherness. It is traditionally drawn using only one brushstroke as a meditative practice in letting go of the mind and allowing the body to create, as the singular brushstroke allows for no modifications.

Exploring Possibilities: The class will be introduced to the range of painting and design options available through gels, mediums, and pastes. Students will design a variety of examples on paper. We will explore collage techniques and make an art journal.

Image Transfers: In this class we will focus on a variety of ways to make image transfers on paper surfaces using acetone, packing tape, gesso, matte medium, and soft gel for painting creations. Enhancing the transfers with watercolor pencils will be introduced.

Mindful Mandalas: We will explore creative ways to make mindful Mandalas. Mandala in Sanskrit means circle and wholeness. We will use colored pencils; Arches text wove paper and pen and ink to make our personal symbols. Working with mandalas is a way to slow the mind down and enter a mediative mindful practice where intuitive creativity can flourish giving one a centering and calming state of wholeness in being.

Watercolor Splashes: Using QoR watercolors we will explore impressionistic blooms/flowers along with butterflies, birds, bees. This class is mostly for beginners.

Neurographic Art: This type of art is a simple way to work with the subconscious mind through drawing and painting. The art technique was created by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2014. We will utilize free expression with drawing, pen, and ink.
