August 22— Abstract Expression We will use Robert Motherwell as a resource for our paintings. Look at some of Motherwell’s paintings and possibly print one out or take a picture for your resource. We will paint our own version/interpretation of a Motherwell painting. August 29—Toolbox Tools A look at an assortment of tools that can be used in creative expression. Bring to class tools that can be used for several line drawings, ie., pencils, nibs, pens, crayons, pointed brush, etc. You may want to research line drawings and Paul Klee. We will take our own lines for a walk and will use Paul Klee as a resource. September 5—Painting Like Cy Twombly Looking at the work of Cy Twombly we will practice letting go of expectations, allow fun to happen and experience spontaneous marks in movement. Twombly is known for his scribbled calligraphy that are among his playful images. Take a pic of one of his paintings as inspiration and reference. Focus will be on spontaneous marks in movement.

September 12—Painting Poetry Select a poetry phrase that will be used as inspiration for paintings. You can select any poem. September 19—Paint an Abstract We will use collage materials as a resource to paint abstractly. First, we will lay out/glue our design onto a substrate with the collage pieces. Then we will paint what we see from our collage abstract design. Be conscious of colors and shapes while selecting and be conscious of how you place your design because this is what you will be painting as your resource.

September 26—Self-portrait How would you describe yourself using pictures, shapes, and color? With a variety of collage elements and paint, we will make a self-portrait. Come to class with magazines and/or images. Have a general idea of how the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears are placed and in proportion to one another. Remember that art is a playground of free expression.
